What is Après Ski? What to Wear to Après Ski?

The art of the après ski. You've heard & seen this term thrown around during ski season, but what exactly is après ski?

What is Après Ski?

Après ski is a French term that directly translates to "after ski" - this is used to describe what happens when the ski day is done. Après ski is more than just a drink at the lodge; it's usually several drinks at the lodge. And if you're in Europe, it usually entails a club-like atmosphere (enter La Folie Douce). Après ski originated in Europe, particularly in countries like France, Switzerland, and Austria - it usually refers to drinking after the ski day is done, but it can also be a range of activities that follow a day on the slopes such as cozying up by the fire with a hot chocolate or heading to the chalet for a hot tub session.

Regardless of how you choose to spend your après ski time, the atmosphere is always warm, welcoming, and filled with a sense of camaraderie after a hard day out on the slopes.

How to Use the Term "Après Ski"

You've likely heard this term in many different scenarios on IG & TikTok, so how do you say it & sound like you know what you're talking about? Oftentimes, après ski is shortened to "après" and it's used as both a noun & verb making it even more confusing, so here are a few examples:

"Heading to the après!" - when you're en route to the afters bar
"What are you wearing to the après?" - Slope Siren, obviously
"Where are we going to après?" - asking which bar to indulge at after the ski day
"I après-ed too hard today" - when the 8pm hangover hits

If you're still confused, you can usually use "après" in place of "party". Heading to the après = Heading to the party.
